Learning 2.0- The completion

I have now completed Learning 2.0. I look forward to going over all the content and studying it in more detail and having a little help in the areas I still have no idea on how to utilise correctly but what a great introduction this has been to the world out there of online freebies. Molly

Online Applications and Tools

Online Application Tools such as google.doc would be a wonderful tool to share with the many library clients who visit the library without any means to save their work. Once google.doc was joined the document could be saved there until it was able to be saved to thumbdrive.

Many secondary school students and universities have laptop programs at their schools and universities where group work on presentations is required. Most teenagers leave these assignments to the last minute!! We all have experienced that on the reference desk!!! All students could be working on their section of the document at their homes on the google.doc site and complile their documents without emails updating information going between students. All students could be working on the document up until the last possible time.

Likewise library staff could work on documents eg policy without the need to send the group involved in the project, updated emails at regular intervals.

Mashups

There are so many ways a library could use Mashups. Create Calendars featuring the libraries in the area or historical sites in the area. Create maps of the historical sites in the area and with link to pictures of the site. Local bush walk maps could be created with the highlights of the walks indicated on these. I would love to have someone to show me how and lots of time to do this. For now I just have to make do with the knowledge and hope that one day the time will come. At least I can impart some of the knowledge onto my clients. My highly technical orientated teenages and husband knew little about this area. I'm sure these applications would help with their presentations too.

Podcasting

There are so many libraries out there podcasting.( Mainly American) I can see that it would be a fantastic tool in libraries where there are many visiting speakers. The State Library of NSW would have many talks to podcast. What could the smaller libraries podcast? At Erina library there is a living library. Wouldn't it be a great idea to podcast some of these talks so that any interested people who cannot make it to the library during the advertised times, could hear the stories these interesting people tell. Just need the time and the technology to do so.

On a lighter note its great that the ABC podcast. The missed Summer Heights High episodes and the missed Chaser edisodes are 2 examples of programs that couldn't be missed. Thanks ABC Molly

Slamming the Boards with Young Students

Answer boards seem to be a great idea but are we making finding information too easy if children can email a librarian on an answerboard site to gain instant information. It is really important that the librarians show children how to find the information not to just tell the children the answer to their question. Children expect information to be instant. What they have to be shown is that there are ways and steps to finding information and these are the ways professional librarians believe will help you in finding what you need. Lets not spoon feed children. They have to learn how to find the correct information in a world saturated in good and bad information.

As I am far behind everyone else I would love to go back and review what I have learnt so far as I have already forgotten soooo much but I have to move on as I am well and truely being left behind by my Learning 2.0 colleagues. I would love to put a picture here and there to smarten up my blog but time is running short. Molly

Rating and Reviewing items or services in the collection

Magazines
As we are so limited with the magazines we purchase in our branch, it may be a good idea to ask the customers for their opinions as to what magazines they would like to see on the shelves.

Customers for book express at the local railway station could also comment on the new items purchased or what they feel should be added to a commuters library trolley. As we are so limited with space we need quality not quantity. Why not listen to what the customers want. Molly

You Tube
This video was selected by my 13 year old daughter after I asked if she knew of an interesting you- tube video I could put on my blog. It has nothing to do with libraries but it did made me laugh. Hope you enjoy it too. Molly

Vidoes You Tube and libraries

There would be lots of possibilities out there for for You tube type videos attached to library sites. Simple library information such as using an online catalogue could be presented this way. I'm sure that would attract lots of child and teenage customers. Have you noticed teenagers don't read lots of detail but are very visual and very quick to adapt to you tube etc. Many teenagers now have their own lap tops and access most of the information they need through their laptops. They are reluctant to visit libraries so maybe the library needs to come to them using a variety of different formats including You tube type videos to assist them in gaining the information they need. Wikis

I have just explored a few Wikis. I was really interested in the Wikis on book suggestions. I am always looking for suggestions for purchase for our Book Express Customers. I particularly liked the section on non fiction books. Some great titles. eg The Idler Book on Crap Vacations- Kiera- sounds like a laugh, Nice Girls don't get rich by Frankel, What should I do with My Life-Bronsen. Sound like good reads for our commuters who don't read fiction but need something light for their journey to Sydney (1 1/2 hours one way) . I would love to see a WIKI on large print books as I find it hard to find many books in large print for our housebound customers. Is there one out there? Molly

RSS

RSS could save you lots of time if you constantly needed the information RSS feeds provide. I set up The Quote of the Day, Word of the Day amongst other blogs. The quote of the day is a great blog. I'd like to use some of these quotes so the archives will come in handy. However I just ventured back into blogland to find a quote I thought I read yesterday which sums up my learning experience but I couldn't find it!! Obviously I have a long way to go with blog sorting. I suppose the important question is what do you do with all this information. Maybe when I retire I'll have time to peruse these blogs at the moment they are taking up an amazing amount of time.

I wonder if the reference librarian would have the time to scroll through information for clients in order to answer a reference question. Maybe blogs serve more of a browsing purpose than a defined information request answer. What do others think? Molly

Blogging and Libraries

The idea of setting up blogs in public libraries is an interesting one. Although many a problem may be experienced. The information posted on a blog may not necessarily be authentic. Some bloggers may see the blog as a way of making a statement about unrelated subjects. Libraries would need to spend a great deal of time deciding which Blogs neeed to be removed and which can stay. The Blogs I visites had little responses recorded. Library clients seem to be taking a long time to warm to the blogs. Some sites had no comments attached to them at all. I wonder if the library client that would be inclined to read such information would be more inclined to read it on a notice than on a computer. I suppose the older generation are becoming a little more techno savvy but we may have to wait a little while longer before the computer literate generation hits the library blogs and respond in a big way. Of course I could be very wrong as I have only viewed a couple of library blogs. I can see the use for blogs in a library but at the moment it would be the younger members that would be more inclined to support them.
